Niagara Falls

On July 22, I visited Toronto. Finally.
I had heard it was a big city, it was all concrete just like Tokyo.
But still, I wanted to see Toronto and I did.
The main purpose was definitely Niagara Falls.

It was just amazing!! But it was different from what I thought.

First, I thought it was kind of hard to see so we had to go deep into a forest or something like that...but it wasn't.
It was just there, just like a fountain in the park.

Second, I thought it was like a mysterious place but it wasn't.
It was exactly a tourist attraction and there were lots of people.
So I waded through a crowd of people to see the Falls.

As soon as I saw it closely, I was surprised how thick it was.
The thick water was falling very powerfully with a roar, and that made me scared even though it was a nice sunny afternoon.

We went down the falls to see it closer and to see the backside of it.
We put on the special raincoat, that meant we were going to get wet.
Indeed, we got wet. It was much more than ordinary rain which we usually get.

But that made a beautiful rainbow in the nice sunny day.

About the backside of falls, we could not really see anything special but water.
It just groaned nonstop. I felt a natural threats.


As you know, there are 2kinds of Falls.
One is Canada's, named Horseshoe Falls.
I was talking about this one.

The other is USA's, named Rainbow Falls.
This is small compared to Canadian one.
Look at this picture.↓ It is tiny.

So, this was my first day in Toronto.

↑ナイアガラの雑学っていうコーナーが特におもしろかった。

７月２２日、遂にトロントに行った。
「トロントはただの大都市で東京みたいなものだよ」って聞いてたけど、
やっぱり見なくちゃ気がすまないから行ってきた。
どうしても見たかったのはナイアガラの滝。

ナイアガラはやっぱりすごかった！！
でも、実は私が思ってたのとチョット違った…。

まず、「ナイアガラの滝は秘境にあって、見に行くには山とか森とか少し分け入ってやっと見れるんだ」と思ってた。でも違った。
ナイアガラの滝は、まるで公園の噴水のようにすぐそこにあった。

次に、「そこはなんとも幻想的でひっそりとした空間なんだ」と思ってた。でも違った。
そこは、まさに観光地で大勢の人が群がり、それはそれはにぎわっていた。

人込みをかき分けて、やっとこさ見物場所を確保。近くで見てみると…
まずその水の厚さにびっくりした。
すごい厚さの水が滝に向かってすごい勢いで落ちていく。
それはすごい迫力で、ずっと見ていると怖くなった。

因みに、現在ナイアガラの水は水力発電に使われているとのことで、
それ以前はなんと水の厚さが今の倍以上あったらしい。その迫力たるや想像不可能。

下に降りてもっと滝を近くで見ることにした。そこからは滝の裏側も見ることが出来る。
滝を見る前に、スペシャルレインコートを着させられた。
見物客を水しぶきから守るためだという。
実際その水しぶきはすごかった！普通に降ってくる雨以上だった。
でもその水しぶきは、晴れた午後の空にそれはそれは見事な虹を作っていた。
完璧な虹を見たのは生まれて初めてだった。右端から左端まで全部見えた。
滝の裏側については、正直特別なものは何も見えなかった。
ただしきりにすごい勢いで水が落ちてくるだけだった。
そしてそれは、止むことなくすごい音でうなり続けていた。
大自然の脅威を感じさせられた。

ナイアガラには２つの滝がある。
１つはカナダの滝で、Horseshoe Fallsと呼ばれている。
私が話していたのはこの滝のことで、
もう１つの滝はアメリカの滝でRainbow Fallsと呼ばれているんだけど、
カナダのと比べるとチッチャイ。
写真みてもわかるように、とってもちっちゃい。
